TAKENAKA, KENSHIRO KEEP BELTS; OBARA DECKS TUNE-UP BOUT BEFORE IBF 140LB MANDATORY SHOT

April 14, 2016

TOKYO, JAPAN

In a dual title promotion, OPBF featherweight champ Ryo Takenaka (13-3-1, 7 KOs) kept his regional belt by halting compatriot, #14 Akira Shono (9-7-3, 5 KOs) at 1:20 of the sixth session on Thursday in Tokyo, Japan. Having acquired the vacant regional belt by demolishing Filipino southpaw Vinvin Rufino last August, Takenaka suffered such a serious right hand injury that he had to have an eight-month hiatus prior to his initial defense. Takenaka decked Shono with a solid right in round five and furiously followed it up to prompt the refereefs intervention midway in the sixth.

Japanese light-flyweight champ Kenshiro (7-0, 4 KOs) looked impressive as he quickly dropped mandatory challenger Atsushi Kakutani (17-5-1, 10 KOs) three times and scored a fine TKO victory at 2:53 into the opening session.
